1. What is ZMA and where does it come from?
ZMA is a scientifically designed, university laboratory tested anabolic mineral support formula. ZMA contains zinc monomethionine aspartate plus magnesium aspartate and vitamin B-6 in precise ratios. ZMA is an all natural product that is manufactured utilizing a unique proprietary process, which significantly enhances the absorption and utilization of both the zinc and magnesium.
ZMA is a supplement used by bodybuilders and athletes that has been clinically proven to significantly increase natural anabolic hormone levels and muscle strength.
2. What does ZMA do and what scientific studies give evidence to support this?
ZMA is claimed to increase natural testosterone levels which can aid in gaining muscle size and strength. Studies have shown that supplementing 30mg of zinc and 450mg per day can elevate testosterone levels up to 30%!
A study was done in 1999 on NCAA football players that showed that ZMA greatly increased natural free testosterone levels and muscle strength. The study was done by Lorrie Brilla, PhD, a sports performance researcher at Western Washington University. The results were also published in the official ACSM journal, Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise, Vol 31, No. 5, May 1999.
As part of the study, the football players were split into two groups. One was a placebo group taking nothing more than your average sugar pill. The other group actually took the ZMA supplement. What was discovered during an eight week spring training program was that the actual ZMA group had 2.5 times greater muscle strength gains than the placebo group. That's a 250% better result!
Pre and post leg strength measurements were conducted using what is called a Biodex isokinetic dynamometer and the strength of ZMA group increased by 11.6% compared to only a 4.6% in the placebo group.
One other added benefit of ZMA is better sleep. Most people that have taken it say they notice they can fall asleep faster, and that they sleep deeper and more soundly than before.
3. Who needs ZMA and how much should be taken? Are there any side effects or symptoms of deficiency?
Any athlete or bodybuilder looking for strength gains and increased athletic performance should consider taking ZMA. Increased athletic activity and muscle stress causes a loss of vitamins and minerals, which make it particularly important for your body to replenish those nutrients due to the rise in blood sugar levels and increase in urination. When this occurs, a loss of magnesium, zinc, B12, B6, folic acid, and many other nutrients occurs, which makes taking ZMA even that more important!
To date, there have been no reported negative side effects directly related to taking ZMA. If you do have any additional concerns about any supplements you are taking or are considering taking, we here at A1Supplements.com always recommend speaking to your physician or doctor.
ZMA should be taken according to the label directions on the bottle of whatever brand you are using. It is, as a rule of thumb, generally taken before bed on an empty stomach 2 hours after eating your last meal.
